The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international agreement established by the United Nations. Its aim is to preserve biological diversity around the world. Nigeria became a party member to CBD during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, in 1992.

The CBD has three main objectives: to conserve biodiversity, to enhance its sustainable use and to ensure an equitable sharing of benefits linked to the exploitation of genetic resources.

The Convention puts much emphasis on the exchange of information and the cooperation between countries. To help these processes, the CBD has set up an international network of partners called the Clearing-House Mechanism (CHM). This website contributes to the CHM network by illustrating what Nigeria is doing in the framework of the CBD.

Nigeria has valuable and rich diversity of biological resources, impressive network of wetlands, plentiful wildlife, and fish resources, extensive forestry resources, and a unique and wide range of national heritage. Conservation of these natural resources is derived from the need to support the economic and livelihood activities of the country’s population who depend on natural resource utilization.

Nigeria is floristically diverse and has 7,895 plant species identified in 338 families; 22,000 vertebrate and invertebrate species in the country. These species include about 20,000 insects, about 1,000 birds, about 1,000 fishes, 274 mammals and 123 reptiles. However, about 0.14% of this rich biodiversity base is being threatened while 0.22% is endangered.
